What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any problem involving severe pain, bleeding, swelling, infection, trauma, or damage that could threaten a tooth or worsen without prompt treatment.
Contact Gavric Dental Associates right away for dental emergencies in Atlanta:
-
Severe or persistent tooth pain
-
A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
-
A knocked-out or loosened permanent tooth
-
Facial or gum swelling
-
A dental abscess or signs of infection
-
A lost filling, crown, or bridge
-
Bleeding that does not stop
-
An injury to the teeth, gums, or jaw
-
Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth
What should I do right now?
Severe tooth pain
Rinse gently with warm water and floss around the tooth to remove trapped food. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums. Call our office promptly so we can identify the cause.
Knocked-out permanent tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk, then call us immediately.
Broken or chipped tooth
Rinse your mouth and save any broken pieces. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and call our office for an evaluation.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the restoration if you can find it. Avoid chewing on that side and contact us as soon as possible to protect the exposed tooth.
Dental swelling or abscess
Swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gums, fever, or a bad taste may signal an infection. Call our office promptly. Dental infections do not usually resolve without treatment.
Bleeding or facial trauma
Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. For uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial injury, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
When should I go to the emergency room?
Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 for:
-
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
-
Severe facial swelling
-
Uncontrolled bleeding
-
Suspected jaw fracture
-
Head or facial trauma
-
Loss of consciousness
-
Fever with rapidly spreading swelling
Hospital emergency departments can manage serious medical complications, but most tooth-specific problems still require follow-up care from a dentist.
How we diagnose and treat dental emergencies
Your emergency visit begins with an exam and a review of your symptoms. Digital x-rays and intraoral photos help your doctor identify the cause and determine the fastest way to relieve pain and protect your tooth.
Depending on the problem, treatment may include:
-
A dental filling
-
A temporary or permanent crown
-
Repair of a chipped tooth
-
Root canal treatment
-
Tooth extraction
-
Treatment for infection
-
Recementing or replacing a restoration
-
Referral to a specialist when needed
The immediate goal is to relieve pain, control infection, and prevent further damage.

Frequently asked questions about emergency dentistry in Atlanta
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe tooth pain, swelling, infection, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, or a lost restoration that exposes the tooth may require urgent dental care.
How quickly can an Atlanta emergency dentist see me?

What should I do for severe tooth pain?
Rinse with warm water, gently floss around the tooth, and call our office. Avoid placing aspirin or other medication directly against the gums.
Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Sometimes. Immediate care offers the best chance of saving a permanent tooth. Keep it moist in milk or gently reposition it in the socket, then call our office right away.
Is a cracked tooth a dental emergency?
A cracked tooth should be evaluated promptly, especially if it causes pain, sensitivity, swelling, or sharp edges. Waiting can allow the crack to spread or expose the tooth to infection.
Is facial swelling a dental emergency?

What happens during an emergency dental visit?
Your doctor will examine the area, take digital X-rays if needed, diagnose the cause, and recommend treatment to relieve pain and stabilize the problem.
